How the agentic loop works

Every agent runs the same loop — from scheduled heartbeat to autonomous action. Here's what happens under the hood.

Heartbeat fires

A scheduled event (every 30 minutes for specialists, daily for project managers) sends a message to the agent's queue.

Triage — anything to do?

A fast, cheap model call checks the agent's task list. If everything is clear, the agent logs "heartbeat OK" and exits. Cost: fractions of a penny.

Load context

Agent config loads from the database. Skills are fetched from S3. Relevant memory is retrieved via semantic search. The system prompt is assembled.

Reason and act

The agent calls its configured model with tools available. It can query datasources, search memory, write findings, delegate to other agents, or request human approval.

Approval gate (if needed)

Actions that modify external systems — publishing content, submitting URLs, sending emails — pause for human approval. You're notified via your preferred channel.

Write to memory

Findings are written to structured markdown files in S3, appended to the changelog, and indexed into vector search for future retrieval.

Delegate or complete

If the agent created tasks for other agents, those agents are woken up immediately. If a callback is set, the parent agent resumes automatically when the work is done.

Delegation in action

When you ask your COO agent a question in chat, it delegates to the right specialist immediately — no waiting for the next scheduled heartbeat. The specialist runs, writes its findings, and triggers a callback. Your COO resumes the conversation with the answer. It feels instant, even though two separate agents ran behind the scenes.
